A pleasant lunch in Brockport

March 5, 2025

Bittersweet Gift Shop opened at 11:00AM and I got there at 10:55AM. While I was waiting for the store to open, I decided to walk down a block to the canal bridge and see what they were doing to fix it. The bridge was up and there was a crane on the other side of the canal that was being used. On the side that I was on, there were two workers surrounded by all kinds of equipment and bridge parts. I remember it being a hassle for people when the bridge was being repaired in Spencerport for a couple of years. I’m sure the Brockport residents and Brockport village businesses will be happy when the bridge reopens.

I returned to Bittersweet and walked inside and there was a woman around my age that was working there. She commented on the nice weather that we were having. While I browsed the store, Neil Young was playing on the radio. I picked out a small vase for my living room and while I was at the counter making the purchase, we talked more about the weather.

The Red Bird Café is such a unique place that I shouldn’t be surprised that the service was unique too. An elderly woman greeted me and said that she was the only person working and that the menu was limited. She offered to make a turkey sandwich, but also that quiche was coming out of the oven. I told her that I would like the turkey sandwich.

To get to the dining room of the Red Bird Café, you have to walk through a small gift shop. Because I was just at a gift shop, I didn’t bother looking at this one. In the dining room, there were five tables with ornate tablecloths and the carpet was ornate as well. Large colorful paintings surround the room and overall, the café was unlike most restaurants.

Bob Dylan was playing in the background as I waited for my food. Two nights ago, I watched the Oscars on TV and the Bob Dylan movie A Complete Unknown was nominated for an award. The song the movie was based on was playing now.

My turkey sandwich and pasta salad was brought over to my table. I immediately took the two olives out of the pasta salad and then proceeded to eat everything else on my plate. Because of the interesting circumstances regarding being the only worker, she gave me an apple strudel for free. I think I will return to this charming café again.
